This swimming club of Kolkata is situated at college street adjacent to Presidency college and old Coffee house. To be more precise, this College square swimming club is one among the four major swimming clubs, those are there in the pavilion, known as Vidyasagar Udyan, formally known as “Gol Dighi’. Apart from CSSC, the other three swimming clubs at the pavilion are: YMCA swimming club, Bowbazaar Byam Samity and Self culture swimming club.
This swimming club of Kolkata is having a 25 meter tall diving station situated at the rear end of its standard 50 meter long standard outer pool, which is the only such tall diving facility there in the college square. Apart from this main swimming pool, the club is having a relax pool besides the main pool of length 20 meter, a standard water polo arena and an inner pool of length 25 meter.
As it can be understood that the swimming pools are having its respective purposes like what a professional swimming club should have. To be detailed with them, the outer primary pool is mainly used for holding several inter club level competitions and other wise is deployed for the swimming coaching and swimming classes for the swimmers having the tags of advanced swimmers and swimmers. Beneath these two top categories of swimmers of this swimming institution comprising of the best swimmers of the club, there are three more categories specifying the level of expertise and capability of the swimmers.
The categories are like: Yellow cap, White Cap and Red cap. Again the red cap swimmers are further divided into five sub category naming A to E. These swimmers are known to be novice and are mainly imparted swimming classes at the inner pool which is covered totally and the water quality of the inner pool is also much good. The same holds true for the swimmers of white cap. For such a thorough and meticulous division of the swimming classes, College square swimming club is said to provide the best swimming classes in Kolkata particularly for children.
Though apart from this hierarchical swimming classes and training, amateur swimmers are also allowed to opt from the outer or the inner pool according to their choice but there is a time slot opened for specifically the amateurs. College square swimming club also has a water polo squad which participates in various waterpolo championships across the district and the state coached by a professional coach similar to the diving squad.
College square swimming club celebrates its annual meet by arranging an intra-club competition around 15th of August every year. This timing of annual swimming competition remains the same for each year and the occasion is scheduled for generally 3 days. This club also has a modern multi-gym facility available in its premises apart from the swimming facilities. This facility is primarily for the swimmers of the club though members can also enroll for this gym training only too.

Brief History of College Square Swimming Club
The college Square swimming club, which has produced many swimming talent, was funded by 17 members in 1917 with Satis Ranjan das, MLC, as the president. The club house was built on the northe east corner of the College Square Tank in 1927 at cost of Rs 8328. Its was designed by by city architect Hathway, who personally supervised its construction. Industrialist G. D. Birla was then president of the club, an office he held from 1921 to 1932.
The construction of a separate filtered water pool for children was later sponsored by M N Dastur & Co. In 1973-74, the wooden diving board and platform were modernized with the fund provided by the Birla house and Bhuwalka Jankalyan Trust.
The name of College Square was changed to vidyasagar udyan on October 18, 1979. but it is still popularly known as Gol Dighi. According to sukumar sen, the word Gol in bengali (meaning round) originated not from the tank's shape but due to the the growth of the particular type of weed called Gol (akin to 'Hogla'). however, the noted stage actor , Sisir Kumar Bhaduri, had refuted Dr sen's argument, stating that the tank was indeed was round in its shape. Bhaduri's contention was corroborated by the maps of Major Schalach and Tassin, printed in 1825 and 1833, respectively. The pool is said to get its present square shape sometime around 1912-13.
The club has been recorded to produce a number of Olympians like D.D. Mulji, Durga das, Kedar shaw, Sambhu saha and Dr. Bijou Kumar Burman. Another prominent member, Ganesh Das, had captained the Indian waterpolo team at delhi Asiad in 1951. Besides various social activities, the club has instituted an annual award for the best bengal swimmers in the men's and women's groups.
